The path to founding Shaolin Data Science was not a straight one. It was born from a pattern of professional experiences that revealed a simple truth: far too many businesses operate on flawed assumptions, outdated processes, and a lack of integrity in their data. The frustration of working within illogical systems became my ultimate motivation to build a company dedicated to fixing them.

The Punchline: My Departure, Their Complaint

The reason I ultimately decided that working for someone else was not a viable path for me can be summarized by a complaint a manager once made. He was upset because I would not even give him a chance to stab me in the back.

Those were his words, not mine.

I was baffled. Why would that even be a complaint? He would get angry every time I double-checked a task he had assigned. While I made no effort to get involved in his work, it was apparently a problem for me to verify mine. My own process, which was a vital part of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), was seen as a personal slight.

The situation came to a head when I pointed out an error he had caused, and despite presenting him with clear evidence, he refused to fix it. He threw a tantrum. Ultimately, management decided I did not fit their image of an engineer and that I should leave.

This experience, more than any other, cemented my decision. I realized that my refusal to engage in a toxic, backstabbing culture was not a personal flaw but a professional strength. My commitment to integrity and my insistence on a robust verification and validation process were not welcome.

The Fallacy of the Wrong Color

The complaint from one manager was not an isolated incident; it was simply the final, most absurd manifestation of a pattern I had experienced throughout my career. Long before I faced a manager who saw integrity as a threat, I faced a professional world that saw my skin color as a determinant of my capabilities.

There was a time when a career advisor in college told me my skin was “the wrong color” for my chosen path. Later, a potential employer told me the same thing, suggesting I pursue a different, more stereotypical job instead. These comments were baffling in their brazenness and disheartening in their implication: that my merit, my education, and my passion were secondary to an irrelevant characteristic.

I came to understand that this sentiment was rooted in a strange and flawed preconception—the belief that certain characteristics activate some kind of “racial bonus.” This notion is as illogical as it is insulting. It’s a mentality that separates the individual’s true worth from their accomplishments, and it’s a profound sign of a broken system.

These experiences, however, became the foundation of my philosophy. The solution to a world that judges you by superficial attributes is to follow the Dao—the Way. It is an understanding that the best way to thrive in an illogical world is to build a skill set so strong it cannot be denied. This is the practice of Zen—prioritizing the quality of your skill development over the quantity of skills learned, and becoming a master of a rational and defensible craft.
